THE IRONY BEHIND GENERATION “X”

When you hear the word GENERATION X, in TV’s and radios, it gives a different “arrive”, “power” and “style”. If you’re like 18-22 years old or in the mid-20’s, then you embody what you call GENERATION X. But I always wonder what does “X” stands for, considering youth today, if before, one great hero uttered that we are hope of the motherland…is it valid until now?

As I can picture, GEN-X peoples are the ones who are always looking down not because they are humble or shameful…but because they are texting. Someone who can listen not to your conflicts…but to his Disc man. Someone who gives you good company…by playing play station.

It’s funny to think that if all of these virtual stuffs will vanquish our modern life then how we will look like after 20-40 years, probably an old man with thick of eyeglasses, not because of reading books but because of too much exposure to computers. Ears with hearing aids because of listening to loud music and finger with callus not because of over work but because of too much texting.

I often hear most adults saying “Ibang-iba na talaga ang kabataan!” I don’t know if it’s a complement or what? Knowing the fact that the new technologies has so much to offer for us, we as responsible persons must know our limitations, bear in mind that computer breaks-down and machines deteriorate but the values we learned from our home, school and environment will retain in our mind and no one can take that away from us. This serves as a reminder especially for those who tend to give more attention to “FORM” and less for “SUBSTANCE”. Because of abusive minds of other people, we tend to deviate from what is real to what is fake.

The irony of virtual world lies in our hands; if we can just learn to establish the equilibrium of life then we can balance out the things that will affect our future. So that “X” stands for NO to DRUGS, NO to SMOKING, NO to CHEATING and the likes.

In this way we can build a good foundation of values and be able to create a better future not only for us, but also for the generation next to us.
